Word Balancer is a free online single player word game which is similar to Tetris but you use letters to make words instead of blocks to make rows. You have to try and score as many points as you can by dropping letters into the play area to make words horizontally or vertically.
To start a new game, click on the 'New Game' button on the left.
You will be given a letter at the top of the play area, use the keyboard to move the letter to where you want it to go and then drop it into the game area. The controls are:
Left Arrow = Move letter left to the next column
Right Arrow = Move letter right to the next column
Down Arrow = Drop letter
Words can be either horizontal or vertical and must be a minimum of 5 letters long. Diagonal words are not allowed. Horizontal words must read from left-to-right, backwards words are not allowed. Vertical words must read from top-to-bottom, upside-down words are not allowed. When a word is found, the letters in that word disappear and any letters above will drop down.
The game is played on a seesaw and the letters you put onto it will affect the angle of it so consider what effect your letter is going to have before dropping it incase the seesaw goes too high or low. The further away from the middle of the seesaw a letter is, then the more effect it has on the seesaw's angle.
The maximum word length in this game is 8 letters. There are some word lists that you might find useful here and the dictionary used in this game can be found here if you want to check if a word is valid before you drop a letter into the play area.
The letters have different values with the harder to use letters being worth more. Look in the top right corner to see how much a letter is worth. You can get bonus points for making longer words, see the right side of the game window for the bonuses. For example, if you make an 8 letter word that has letter values totalling 10 points then the value of that word is multiplied by 10 to score 100 points. If you make a long word like STRAINED, then you also score points for smaller words inside that word like STRAIN, TRAINED, TRAIN and RAINED.
You can get bonus points for setting up a chain reaction but this won't happen very often unless you deliberately try for it. A chain reaction happens when you drop a letter and it makes a word, then when the letters from that word disappear, the letters above then drop down to form another word. You score 20 bonus points if this happens. If this then causes further chain reactions on that drop then you score a further 20 bonus points each time.
There are some statistics at the bottom of the game window that tell you how many words you have found, how many of each length of word you have found, your highest scoring word, your highest scoring drop and your overall score.
The game can be over in two ways which are set out below:
(1) You put a letter into a full column. There is a maximum of 8 letters allowed in a column. The note at the bottom of the game window will turn red to remind you of this when you have put 7 letters into a column.
(2) There is too much weight on one side of the seesaw so it goes off the bottom of the game area. The border of the game area will turn red if the weight on one side of the seesaw is getting dangerously high. Be careful when you are about to make a word as this can tip the seesaw too much and result in your game being over so don't forget to think about what effect your word will have on the seesaw's angle when the letters in your word disappear, especially when your word is going to make letters from the far left or right columns disappear as those affect the seesaw angle more.
451 is my best score and 45 is the most words I've found in a game. See if you can try and beat those!
If you liked this game then you might like to try my Word Drop game as well. It is similar but not played on a seesaw.
